About — Pourist Value
How is Pourist Value calculated?
Pourist Value (PV) is an internal index that combines the bean's catalog information into a single number. We built it to estimate a bean's value on a shared basis.
What PV looks at
PV is calculated from nine pieces of catalog information about the bean.
- Variety — rarer varieties like Geisha, SL28, or Eugenioides score higher
- Process — washed, natural, honey, anaerobic; more deliberate processes weigh higher
- Origin — from Panama and Ethiopia Yirgacheffe to daily-grade origins
- Competition — BOP and CoE winners, finalists, and participants
- Lot size — micro-lots score higher than commodity volume
- Producer — known farms and producers
- Altitude — growing elevation
- Roaster reputation — the roaster's market standing
- External cup score — scores assigned outside Pourist (BOP / CoE basis)
What PV doesn't see
PV does not include user satisfaction, ratings, or popularity. The same bean tastes different across equipment, environment, recipe, and the brewer's skill — and how a cup is received is personal too. Your brewing feedback is used inside the app to shape your recipe — separately from PV.
How to read a PV score
PV does not decide whether a bean is good or bad. It's closer to a signal of what the bean carries. How that potential shows up in your cup is up to your brewing and your palate, and a bean with a lower PV can still be exactly the cup you love.
