Equipment notes

The American Press was created by Alex Albanese, an inventor with a background in applied physics, who spent years refining the idea of a press with no messy cleanup before launching it on Indiegogo in late 2015. Instead of letting grounds float free in the carafe, it locks them inside a sealed pod, keeping the richness of a French press while doing away with the aftermath. The pod rides on the plunger, with a coarser stainless steel inlet filter on its underside and an ultra-fine 100-micron stainless steel outlet filter on top. As you press, the pod travels down through the water while a silicone seal builds gentle pressure that forces water up through the coffee bed from below. Because immersion is combined with pressure, the extraction behaves less like a steeping French press and more like an AeroPress, and the all-metal filtration lets the coffee's oils pass straight into the cup. Use a medium grind, press just far enough to wet the grounds for a short pre-infusion, then plunge slowly over 30 seconds to two minutes. The whole brew finishes in about two to three minutes, giving a full-bodied cup with its oils intact yet noticeably less sediment than a French press. It suits anyone who loves French press body but not the silt and cleanup that usually come with it.

Filters that fit

The filter is built into the brewer, so there is nothing extra to buy.
