Equipment notes
CafeSolo is the signature immersion brewer from Danish design house Eva Solo, introduced in the early 2000s. Copenhagen design duo Tools Design (Claus Jensen and Henrik Holbaek) set out to brew and serve coffee with no machine and no paper filter, and the result collected international design awards including a 2005 IDEA Gold. Coffee and water steep together in the glass flask, but unlike a French press there is no plunger. A convex stainless mesh funnel seated in the neck filters only at the moment you pour, so the grounds are never pressed; oils pass through the mesh for body while the cup stays noticeably cleaner. A zip-on neoprene jacket holds the brewing temperature steady. Use a coarse grind, pour in all the water at once, stir briefly, steep for about four minutes, then decant fully to stop extraction. With only steep time and grind size to manage it is highly repeatable, and the glass body shows the whole process while asking for some care against knocks. It is a brewer for those who love French press weight but want less sludge, and who like brewing several cups at once.
Filters that fit
The filter is built into the brewer, so there is nothing extra to buy.
