Equipment notes
The Crystal Dripper is a conical brewer released in November 2014 by Key Coffee, a Japanese coffee company founded in 1920, which poured its accumulated extraction know-how into the design. The stated intent was not the sparkling looks but stability: hold an ideal hand-drip flow rate while extracting the whole bed evenly, so a rich body comes out cup after cup. It is currently sold as the Noi Crystal Dripper. The diamond-cut faceting that covers the entire inner wall is the heart of the design. The paper filter touches only the apexes of the facets, so brewed coffee seeps out at those points and trickles down in a slow zigzag along the facet slopes. The result is a gentler drawdown than a Hario V60 of the same conical, single-large-hole format; reviewers place its pace closer to a Kono and describe a concentrated yet balanced cup. Being polycarbonate, it shrugs off drops, and extraction stays steady whether you brew one cup or four, making it a forgiving tool. Besides Key Coffee's own conical papers, Hario V60 02 filters fit as well. For all its glitter the cup itself is calm: this is a dripper for beginners who want the tool, not the technique, to steady the flow, and for anyone who prefers weighty body over bright clarity.
