Equipment notes

Melitta traces its roots to 1908, when Melitta Bentz of Dresden, Germany patented a filter device lined with paper, the start of the paper coffee filter. In the 1930s the company tapered the filter into the wedge-like cone shape with ribs that its drippers still use, and the 1x2 is the size in that lineage that Melitta Japan rates for two to four cups. With only a single drain hole in the narrow base, water stays briefly inside the dripper before making its way out, while ribs on the inner wall open channels between filter and wall to support even extraction. Because the dripper's structure sets the pace of the flow, pouring speed has relatively little influence, and the longer contact time tends to give the cup a fuller body. It uses 1x2 wedge filters. Melitta's recommended method is simple: wet the grounds for a short bloom, then pour the rest of the water evenly in one go up to the line for your number of cups. Preheating the dripper and cup also helps. This is a dripper for anyone who wants to brew a few cups reliably without precise pouring, and for those who want a classic form of hand drip in their daily routine.
