Equipment notes
Melitta is where pour-over paper filtration began: in 1908, Melitta Bentz of Dresden, Germany invented the paper coffee filter, and in 1937 the company laid the groundwork for the cone-shaped filter that followed. The 1x1 is the smallest wedge format in that lineage, a single-cup dripper in its most traditional form. A single drain hole at the narrow base lets water pool briefly before passing through slowly, while ribs on the inner wall keep channels open between paper and cone for even extraction. Because the geometry regulates the flow on its own, pouring speed has little effect, and the extended contact time draws out a full-bodied, aromatic cup. Melitta's own method is equally simple: bloom the grounds for 20 to 30 seconds, then pour the remaining water evenly in one go. Few drippers demand less technique. The lightweight AS resin body holds little heat, so preheat it, and slightly hotter water suits the long contact time. This is a dripper for anyone who wants one dependable cup without ceremony, and for anyone curious about where hand drip began.
