Equipment notes

The Tricolate is a brewer developed in South Australia around the idea of zero bypass, meaning no water escapes past the filter edge without passing through the coffee. Inventor Dan Shusett designed it in 2018 with the aim of removing hard-to-repeat pouring variables from filter brewing. A cylindrical Tritan chamber holds a flat proprietary paper filter at its base, while a dispersion screen on top spreads water across the entire bed. With no path along the walls, all water travels through the coffee and percolates by gravity alone, so depending on the recipe, drawdown tends to take longer than with a typical cone dripper. Once water is added, the screen handles distribution, so precise kettle technique matters less than in conventional pour-over, though a steady pour still helps. Grind advice varies between guides, so adjust coarser if drawdown runs long. The maker says it reaches higher extraction than typical pour-over, and it suits brewers who want a repeatable, hands-off method.
