Equipment notes

The Porlex Tall is a manual grinder from Porlex, the Japanese ceramics maker that began in Osaka in 1978. It uses the same burr platform as the Mini but extends the body to hold more beans at once. A conical ceramic burr sits inside a low-static stainless steel body, it grinds by turning the handle, and it uses a clicked, stepped adjustment. It is made in Japan. The ceramic burr resists heat and will not rust, and the stainless body reduces static cling. As ceramic, it cuts less crisply than steel and adds fines at fine settings, while the conical geometry leans toward body. Clicked steps make positions easy to reproduce, but the original can widen spread at very fine settings due to outer-burr play. Its larger capacity makes grinding two or more cups at once convenient, and it fits the pour-over and French press range. It fits users who want to grind several cups at once with more capacity than the Mini, while keeping a quiet, powerless manual mill.
