Equipment notes

The Hario Skerton is Hario's signature ceramic hand grinder, and its large capacity and low price long made it a reference point for entry-level manual mills. It uses a conical ceramic burr in a classic layout, with the crank and hopper seated over a glass lower jar. It is the first-generation model that came before the later Plus and Pro revisions. The conical ceramic burr runs cool, but the original Skerton lacked a structure to steady the upper burr, so a wobbling crank could widen particle variation, a well-known weak point. Grind size is set with an adjustment below the burr, mainly covering coarse ranges like French press through medium pour-over. Its large jar can grind several cups at once, but it is not suited to the fine, uniform range of espresso. It fits beginners who want a high-capacity manual mill at a low price, and users focused on French press or pour-over.
