Equipment notes
Comandante is a German brand of hand grinders assembled by hand in Germany, and the C40 MK4 is its flagship. It uses a 39 mm conical steel burr that Comandante calls the Nitro Blade, made from a high-nitrogen martensitic stainless steel prized for hardness, wear resistance, and edge retention. The wooden handle is turned from oak in Germany's Black Forest, and the MK4 uses a stainless axle and bearings internally. It continues the line begun by the MK3, which first carried the Nitro Blade in 2015, while the MK4 removes the central axle hole where beans could lodge and upgrades the bearings to cut axle play. The conical geometry leans toward body, yet the tighter axle alignment keeps particle distribution steady enough for clean pour-over cups. Stepped click adjustment makes settings easy to memorise and repeat, and the range spans filter through French press. On the standard axle, the fine end of the range around espresso feels relatively coarse between steps. It suits drinkers who move between pour-over and all-round brewing and value repeatability and durability.
