Equipment notes

This model translates the Wave 185 from Kalita, founded in Tokyo in 1958, into Mino-yaki (美濃焼), the pottery of the Mino region in Gifu Prefecture. The Wave's design principle of a flat coffee bed that reduces the influence of pouring technique stays intact, now joined by a porcelain body fired in the region's kilns and the natural expression of its glaze. The structure is the same as the standard 185: a flat bottom, three drain holes, and a dedicated 20-crimp Wave filter that limits wall contact for even drainage. What differs is that the drain holes are roughly 2mm larger in diameter, giving a noticeably freer drawdown, and that the porcelain body's high thermal mass keeps the brewing temperature steady once preheated. Retail introductions note that the enlarged holes make aromatics easier to draw out. Usage is the same as any Wave. Use Kalita 185 Wave filters, pour in stages so the water never rises above the filter's crimps, and preheat before brewing so the porcelain does not steal heat. This is a dripper for those who want the Wave's forgiveness, less swayed by pour technique than a cone, along with the material character and expression of ceramics.
