Equipment notes

Hario began in Tokyo in 1921 as a maker of heatproof laboratory glass. The V60 arrived in the mid-2000s after long trial and error aimed at recreating the taste of flannel drip with a paper filter, its name drawn from the V-shaped cone and its 60-degree angle. Michael Phillips' World Brewers Cup victory in 2010 made it famous worldwide, and the 02 is its most popular size. The geometry is unchanged: a 60-degree cone, spiral ribs, and a large single drain hole that barely restricts flow, with the same character in which pouring speed directly determines extraction. This model has a titanium body, lighter than stainless steel and highly resistant to corrosion. Because metal draws heat from the water first, preheating before brewing matters, and once preheated the temperature holds steady. A good starting point is a medium-fine grind, sufficiently hot water, and a spiral pour after rinsing and blooming. As a model that leaves the V60's expressiveness untouched and refines only weight and durability, this is a dripper for backpackers who count every gram, outdoor brewers, and anyone who wants a metal V60 built to last.
