Equipment notes
This is the 02 size of the all-stainless dripper Hario built for brewing without a paper filter, covering anything from a single cup to a batch to share. The official introduction states the goal of combining paper-like clarity with the coffee oils characteristic of metal filters, and the design layers two sheets of finely etched stainless mesh to reduce the muddiness of conventional metal filters. The double mesh wall blocks most fines while passing coffee oils, producing a heavier, more textured body than a paper V60. Hands-on reviews consistently observe less sediment at the bottom of the cup than a French press, and even less than typical metal filters. The dense mesh wall does hold water, though, so at the same grind the brew runs noticeably slower than paper, and the tendency grows more pronounced at larger doses. The standard move is therefore to grind one or two steps coarser than you would for paper. Grind fine and the mesh clogs, dragging the brew time out. After use, empty the grounds and rinse the fines out of the mesh gaps; it is also dishwasher safe. This is a dripper for anyone who wants to quit paper filters and enjoy the rich texture the oils bring, up to multi-cup batches.
Filters that fit
The filter is built into the brewer, so there is nothing extra to buy.
