Equipment notes
The Hario My Cafe Drip Filter (MDF-1) is a disposable drip filter made for brewing a single cup anywhere, at home, in the office, or outdoors. Hario borrowed the conical filter shape it uses for the V60, so you simply unfold the paper and polyethylene hanger arms, rest them on the rim of a cup, and pour over with no dripper at all. It fits mugs with a mouth of 6.5 to 8 cm, comes in packs of 22, and is made in Japan. The filter is not paper but a nonwoven fabric of polypropylene and polyethylene. With no dripper body there are no ribs and no drain hole; water leaves through the whole bag surface, so flow is set only by the fabric and your pour rate. Hario says the coffee-specific filter stabilizes blooming and extraction so the coffee drips at a steady pace. Oils and fines are held back much like paper, giving a clean, light-bodied cup. The official method is 8 to 12 g of coffee, wet all the grounds and bloom for about 30 seconds, then finish pouring within three minutes. The bag hangs into the cup and can touch the brewed coffee, so pour less than the cup holds and in small increments. There is no body to hold heat, so preheat the cup and use slightly hotter water. It suits anyone who wants a proper single cup while traveling, at work, or without any equipment.
Filters that fit
The filter is built into the brewer, so there is nothing extra to buy.
