Hario was founded in Tokyo in 1921 as a maker of heatproof laboratory glass. The V60 grew out of long trial and error aimed at bringing the clarity of cloth-filter (nel drip) coffee to a paper filter, and it reached the market in the mid-2000s; its name comes from the V-shaped cone and its 60-degree angle. It has since been used by several World Brewers Cup champions, and the 02 is the middle of the three sizes, covering one to four cups. The 60-degree cone builds a deep coffee bed, while spiral ribs along the wall keep water moving and give escaping gas a path out. The large single drain hole imposes almost no flow restriction, so pouring speed plays a direct role in extraction: a faster pour tends toward a lighter cup, a slower one toward a fuller cup. It takes a dedicated cone paper filter, and the resin body is light, durable, and needs little preheating. Start with a filter rinse, properly hot water, a bloom, and steady spiral pours. With no flow limiter in the way, small changes in grind or pour speed show up in the cup, so the same bean can be steered lighter or fuller.
