Equipment notes

The Mugen is a one-pour dripper Hario introduced in 2021 in collaboration with Tetsu Kasuya, the 2016 World Brewers Cup Champion. Its name, mugen (無限), means "infinite," a nod to the possibilities Hario sees in the V60 cone, and it was designed so that a single continuous pour, with no bloom and no staged pours, can produce a complete cup. Where a standard V60 carries spiral ribs, the Mugen uses star-shaped ribs that let the V60-format paper filter cling closely to the wall. That close contact slows the flow of water through the cone, giving water and coffee more contact time from just one pour, so the dripper itself does the slowing that staged pours would otherwise do. Use is simple: wet the grounds evenly from the center outward, pour all the water in one continuous go, then wait for the bed to drain, adjusting the grind if the drawdown runs too fast or too slow. Because it asks little of the pour, it tends to give consistent results from day to day, making it a dripper for anyone who wants an easy daily routine without complex technique, and for those just starting out with pour over.
