Equipment notes
Hario was founded in Tokyo in 1921 as a maker of heatproof laboratory glass. The V60 grew out of long trial and error aimed at bringing the clarity of cloth-filter (nel drip) coffee to a paper filter, and it reached the market in the mid-2000s; its name comes from the V-shaped cone and its 60-degree angle. The 01 is the smallest of the three sizes, built for the one or two cups you brew each day. The V60 geometry is unchanged: a 60-degree cone, spiral ribs, and a large single drain hole that barely restricts flow. Because the cone is smaller, a single-serving dose sits as a deeper bed than it would in a larger size, which can lengthen the time water spends passing through the grounds. It takes dedicated 01 cone paper filters, and the resin body is light and needs little preheating. A good starting point is a filter rinse, a short bloom, and a few gentle spiral pours. As with the other V60 sizes, nothing regulates the flow for you, so small differences in grind and pour show up in the cup, which also makes it a good tool for learning how each variable changes the result. This is a dripper for the single-serving brewer who wants to dial in one cup carefully every day.
