Equipment notes

The V60 Alpha is HARIO Taiwan's rethinking of the standard V60 in ceramic. It keeps the bones of the original, the 60-degree cone and the large single outlet, but inverts the signature spiral: instead of raised ribs that hold the filter away from the wall, the Alpha carves concave grooves into the wall itself. The intent is to press the filter flush against the ceramic and cut down on bypass, the water that slips past the coffee bed along the sides. Twelve inward grooves keep the paper filter seated against the smooth ceramic wall, so water is guided down through the entire coffee bed rather than around it. Extraction becomes more even and repeatable, and at the same grind the drawdown tends to run calm and unhurried. The thick body, finished in a matte obsidian glaze, holds its temperature steadily through the brew once preheated. In use it behaves like a standard V60: bloom, then pour in stages. Because the ceramic carries so much thermal mass, preheating before you brew is all but mandatory. It is a dripper for those who want the V60's freedom of pouring intact, while letting the vessel itself take one variable, bypass, off their hands.
