Equipment notes

Hario began in 1921 as a maker of heat-resistant laboratory glass in Tokyo, and the V60 was born in the mid-2000s after years of trial and error aimed at recreating the taste of nel drip with a paper filter. The name comes from the V-shaped cone and its 60-degree angle. The 01 is the smallest size in the lineup, built around the one or two cups you brew each day, and this model is that 01 made in ceramic. The V60 geometry is unchanged: a 60-degree cone, spiral ribs, and a large single drain hole that barely restricts flow. The narrow base means the same dose forms a deeper coffee bed, so water spends more time passing through the grounds and the flavor comes out more concentrated. It takes dedicated 01 cone paper filters. The ceramic body retains heat well for a stable temperature but is heavier and benefits from thorough preheating. A good starting point is a medium-fine grind, a bloom with two to three times the weight of the coffee in water, then two or three pours. Nothing regulates the flow for you, so small differences in your pour show up directly in the cup, while the deep bed still delivers a dense, focused cup at small volumes. This is a dripper for the single-serving brewer who wants one precise cup every day, with the temperature stability of ceramic.
