Hario began in 1921 as a maker of heatproof laboratory glass in Tokyo. The V60 emerged from long trial and error aimed at recreating the taste of cloth-filter (nel drip) coffee with a paper filter, reaching the market in the mid-2000s; the name comes from its V-shaped cone and 60-degree angle. The 2010 World Brewers Cup win by Michael Phillips put it on the world stage, and the 02 is the most popular size of all. This model is that 02 made in ceramic. The 60-degree cone stacks a deep coffee bed, while spiral ribs along the wall keep water moving and let degassing air escape. The large single drain hole imposes almost no flow restriction, so pouring speed directly decides the extraction: pour fast for a lighter body, slow for a heavier one. It takes a dedicated cone paper filter. The ceramic body retains heat well for a stable temperature but is heavier and benefits from thorough preheating. Start with a medium-fine grind, properly hot water, a filter rinse, a bloom, and spiral pours. With no flow limiter in the way, small changes in grind or pour speed show up directly in the cup, so the same bean can swing from bright and light to deep and heavy. This is the ceramic version of the most versatile dripper there is, for anyone who wants to shape the cup with the pour itself.
